How to Create a Montessori Environment at Home

By Anuja Zingade | March 16, 2026

Bringing Montessori principles into your home doesn't require expensive materials. It's about shifting your perspective and preparing your space to encourage your child's natural independence.

1. Prepare the Physical Environment

A child-sized environment allows children to do things for themselves without asking for adult help.

Make things accessible

Place their books and toys on low shelves instead of tossing them into a large toy box. This encourages order and lets your child clearly see what is available.

2. Encourage Practical Life Skills

Children naturally want to participate in the daily life of the family.

In the Kitchen

Provide a sturdy step stool so your toddler can reach the counter. Give them small, manageable tasks like washing vegetables, pouring water, or spreading butter on toast.

3. Foster Interdependence

In a Montessori environment, we guide children to respect their space and their community holding their own responsibilities. Let them help tidy up!
